Cut the end off your toothbrush

This weight and space saving betterment is a classic among ultralight packing extreme mountaineering types — but why shouldn't get the same benefits whenever you take your toothbrush on a trip to your local cineplex or disco?

I started with an already light bamboo toothbrush — weighing just 11g. After carefully sawing it in half and sanding down the rough edges it weighed just 6g — saving 5g.

A toothbrush that has been sawn in half

Though it looks short, it brushes just fine, and is easy to grip.

Bonus points:

Your toothbrush is likely to be the longest item in your washbag. Now that it's shorter, you have the opportunity to get a smaller washbag. (For me this saved an additional 30g)
