Leave a copy of your keys with a trustworthy pal
Calling on an emergency locksmith in the middle of the night can be really expensive — especially if they turn out to be just some guy with a crowbar.
It's much easier to get copies of your keys cut in the daylight, and then give those keys to a pal, like your dad. Then, in the event that you get locked out of your home or your car, you can ask your pal for the keys and they'll help you out because they're your pal.
Alternatives
- You could hide your keys. This is a risky alternative. Someone might see you hiding your keys, or they could simply guess that they're under the gnome.
- Learn to pick locks (then hide the picks) — not only will you be able to get back in the house, you'll also know a useful trade.
- You could resign yourself to the fates, by simply never locking your door.
