Switch off 'raise to wake'
Phones have been exhaustively tweaked by clever designers to make sure you spend as much time on them as possible. Whenever a point of friction is discovered it is quickly smoothed out — allowing you to seamlessly transition from interacting with people in real life, to staring at a stream of contextless bullshit — which is, probably, not a good thing.
One such design decision was ‘raise to wake’ on iPhone — called ‘lift to check phone’ on Android devices.
Before 2017 you had to press a button to wake up your iPhone. ‘Raise to wake’ meant you only had to lift the phone up for the screen to turn on.
Switching off ‘raise to wake’ adds that tiny bit of friction back to your phone — giving you an extra second to realise that, although it may be boring, you probably shouldn't be on Instagram at your grandfathers funeral.
Switching off ‘raise to wake’ also saves you a little battery life too — as the screen won't turn on accidentally, or when you're just lifting your phone up to clean fluff out of the charging port.
